I was listening to Jillian Michaels’ podcast the other day. She was speaking to a caller who wanted to pursue her dream of becoming a personal trainer. Despite knowing what she wants to do with her life, she wasn’t doing anything to make it happen. She was stuck. She didn’t know what to do or how to accomplish her goal, so she wanted Jillian’s advice. After exploring the caller’s mindset, Jillian was able to pinpoint the core of her problem. She said something to the caller that really resonated with me. She said, “nothing doesn’t beget nothing. Nothing will ALWAYS manifest your worst possible scenario.”

No Spirit of Fear

Let’s think about that for a moment. One of the greatest deterrents from people pursuing their goals or stretching out of their comfort zone is fear! Whether we acknowledge it or not, it’s at the core of anything we’re reluctant to do. You want a new career, but you’re afraid to quit your current job. You want to lose weight, but you’re ashamed of your current size, so you won’t go to the gym. Or you’re afraid you won’t be able to complete the challenging workout because you’re too out of shape.

Here’s what Jillian was saying. People mistakenly believe that if they don’t do anything then the worst case scenario is things will remain the same. But that’s flawed logic. If your greatest fear is that you will develop diabetes and won’t be around for your family, then if you do nothing about your current weight, that’s exactly what’s going to happen. Your greatest fear will manifest.

In another example. You’re single and you want to meet Mr./Ms. Right and fall in love, but you’re afraid of getting hurt. So, you won’t allow yourself to be vulnerable enough to trust somebody. Furthermore, you’re also too afraid to get out there and meet new people. Your ultimate fear is that you will never meet anyone and will grow old living alone. Well, if you do nothing to change your relationship status, then you will end up alone.

So, you see, doing nothing doesn’t beget nothing. Instead, doing nothing will ALWAYS manifest your worst possible scenario.

Here’s the takeaway. Don’t allow fear to control your life. God said He didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but He never said fear wouldn’t come upon us. We all experience fear. The key is to do it afraid. I guarantee you, every time you step out of your comfort zone and do the thing you’re most afraid to do, it increases your confidence. Inevitably, it improves the likelihood that you’ll step out next time with less fear and trepidation. You do that enough, and you will become fear-less!!
